At the start of the year, I set two goals for myself. One was to write 5,000 words a day. The other was to walk 5 kilometers. I liked the symmetry.
Here we are in February and I’m proud to say that I’ve been killing the walking goal. This surprises me as I hate walking. But I do enjoy a good break and I’ve been digging into a bunch of non-fiction books and podcasts on my neighborhood strolls.
I’m not killing it on the word count though. Part of the problem is, I don’t even know where I stand now on average words a day. It’s not great. I’ll have 2k to 3k days and then not get back to it for a week. That’s pretty poor job performance for someone wanting to call themselves a professional.
So, I’m going to start doing this a little more scientifically. I’m going to start tracking my word counts per writing session as well as daily totals. I’m also going to start doing as I say and taking my own advice when it comes to productivity.
I won’t bore you all with the day by day here. I realize not everyone is interested in the writing of a book or a day in the life of an author. I’ve started a Facebook group called 5K5K for those that are interested. The groups not just about me. I want to hear about your writing projects as well.
Join me here if you’re interested.
